Scene from the movie Lamb, Ethiopia © Photo courtesy of ARThound, Geneva Anderson Yared Zeleke Of course Ephraim is distraught when he learns of his uncle’s plans for Chuni and makes a plan to escape earning money. His uncle strongly opposes this and wants to make a man out of him and put him in the fields. He prefers to stay home with the women tending to Chuni and cooking, his passion in life. Ephraim shares a special bond with Chuni. The family is just getting by and it is decided that Ephraim’s beloved sheep will be slaughtered for a holiday, setting up something of a ticking clock. We watch the family as they farm and celebrate a lifestyle far removed from the one lived in the West. Scene from the movie Lamb, Ethiopia, 2560×1440 © Photo courtesy of While Ephraim settles in to his new life, his father goes to Addis to look for work. The family consists of a loving but all-business great aunt who keeps a whip by her side for occasional discipline, a stern uncle, an aunt concerned with her sick daughter, and another daughter who is past marrying age but seems more interested in reading newspapers than getting married and having children. Forced to move after a drought paralyzes their village, the father and son along with his mother’s sterile pet lamb, Chuni, travel south where their relatives live on farmland surrounded by rolling green hills. Life changes drastically for him and his father, Abraham (Indriss Mohamed) once his beloved mother passes away. ![]() The simple, heartwarming, semi-autobiographical movie focuses on the life of 9 year-old Ephraim (Rediat Amare). Variety added the then 37-year old writer-director, Zeleke, to its “10 Screenwriters to Watch” list. It was the Ethiopian entry for the Best Foreign Language film at the 88 th Academy Awards, but wasn’t nominated. It screened at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2015 Milano Film Festival, winning “Best Feature Film”. Lamb made its world premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Lamb shares unexpected images of picturesque villages, priests in bright colored robes, and craggy lush peaks. Ethiopia has a tendency to bring pictures of famine, conflict and strife to mind. It does an extraordinary job of telling a story that could only be set in Ethiopia. This award winning Ethiopian film, Lamb (2015) 94 minutes Amharic with English subtitles is a must see. In the late 1970's she was involved with a basketball program called "Shooting Stars" composed of celebrities playing hoops for charitable causes and her father, Art, was the coach. British designer Mary Quant supplied her with one of the first mini-skirts to be worn on American television, which caused quite a stir back in 1965, and only added to HOLLYWOOD A GO-GO's risque reputation.Īfter HOLLYWOOD A GO-GO ended DeDebecame a member of an avant-garde dance troupe named "The Movement" which was a bit too hip for the mid-60's and thereafter disbanded. When watching DeDeon the show it is readily apparent that she always appeared to be having a great time (see the photo montage below) and she had all of the dance moves down perfectly. She is one of only two dancers who were there from the beginning of the show to the end in February 1966. However a new TV show called HOLLYWOOD A GO-GO intervened and DeDe was chosen as one of the first GAZZARRI DANCERS. While DeDewas a student at UCLA in 1964 she was slated to go to Africa on an anthropological dig with the world-reknowned Dr. Born as DEANNA, she was called DeANNon HOLLYWOOD A GO-GO, and now prefers to be called DeDe. She was also very popular and even had fan clubs here at home, as well as overseas. She is one of only two dancers who were on the show from the first to the last episode. 49th in production, filmed Oct 17-19, next up- "Monkees on the Wheel. At 5'10" tall, with long blonde hair and a beautiful svelte figure, DeANN is probably the most recognizable GAZZARRI DANCER. While Micky's live rendition of the group-composed "Goin' Down" gets its second and last airing (from "The Wild Monkees"), this marked the debut for Boyce and Hart's "Words" (recorded June 14), a harder rocking version superior to the duo's original production of Aug 15 1966, featured in the first season episode "Monkees Manhattan Style." Three Monkees actually play on this Chip Douglas production, first issued as the B-side of fourth single "Pleasant Valley Sunday," with Jones on percussion, Nesmith on electric guitar and percussion, and Tork on organ and killer bass, again sharing lead vocals with Micky. Appearing unbilled are Bonnie Dewberry as Cousin Lucy (previously seen in "I Was a Teenage Monster"), and rock photographer (ala Linda Eastman) Nurit Wilde, who nine months later gave birth to Michael Jason Nesmith, third son of Papa Nez (she was married to frequent Monkees writer Peter Meyerson, who later did the same for WELCOME BACK KOTTER). ![]() Micky and Peter impersonate 'The Lone Stranger and Pronto' as they infiltrate Black Bart's gang, while Mike discovers that 'Texas crude' is the reason behind the attacks (nothing is resolved, the bad guys simply riding off). Meanwhile, kindly Ben Cartwheel (Barton MacLane) assures Kate that he's available whenever she needs him, because the sheriff (James Griffith) is too busy shooting (his TV series). The Monkees are visiting Michael's Aunt Kate (Jacqueline DeWit), whose Texas ranch is under assault by Black Bart and his cutthroat gang. 45 (Dec 4 1967), "Monkees in Texas" is a major cut above other recent entries, another Western satire with great villains Barton MacLane (I DREAM OF JEANNIE), Rex Holman (STAR TREK's "Spectre of the Gun"), and Len Lesser (previously seen in "Monkees in a Ghost Town"). ![]() ![]() He was considered the 19th century's leading expert on the geographical distribution of animal species, and is sometimes called the "father of biogeography". He then did fieldwork in the Malay Archipelago, where he identified the faunal divide now termed the Wallace Line, which separates the Indonesian archipelago into two distinct parts: a western portion in which the animals are largely of Asian origin, and an eastern portion where the fauna reflect Australasia. Like Darwin, Wallace did extensive fieldwork, first in the Amazon River basin. It spurred Darwin to set aside the "big species book" he was drafting, and quickly write an abstract of it, published in 1859 as On the Origin of Species. His 1858 paper on the subject was jointly published that year together with extracts from Charles Darwin's earlier writings on the topic. He is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection. Gold Medal of the Société de Géographie (1870)Įxploration, evolutionary biology, zoology, biogeography, and social reformĪlfred Russel Wallace OM FRS (8 January 1823 – 7 November 1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator.Alfred Russel Wallace: A Capsule Biography. On 1 November 1915 a medallion bearing his name was placed in Westminster Abbey. He died in his sleep at Broadstone on 7 November 1913 three days later his remains were buried nearby. He remained active into his ninety-first year. His final two books were published in the year of his death, 1913. His collecting activities had earned him a sizable nest egg with which he hoped he could retire to a quiet life as a country gentleman.īy the turn of the century, Wallace was very probably Britain's best known naturalist. Wallace left the Malay Archipelago in February of 1862 and returned to England on 1 April. This line marks the limits of the eastern extent of many Asian animal forms and, conversely, the limits of the western extent of many Australasian forms. "Wallace's Line," extending between the islands of Bali and Lombok and Borneo and Sulawesi. He was especially known for his studies on its zoogeography, including his discovery and description of the faunal discontinuity that now bears his name. By the end of his trip (and for the rest of his life) he was known as the greatest living authority on the region. Wallace's discovery of natural selection occurred almost at the midpoint of his stay in the Malay Archipelago. The volume he later wrote describing his work and experiences there, The Malay Archipelago, is the most celebrated of all writings on Indonesia and ranks as one of the nineteenth century's best scientific travel books. His collected 125,660 specimens, including more than a thousand species new to science, including cetoniine scarabs. He spent nearly eight full years there, and during that period he undertook about 70 different expeditions to every important island in the archipelago. He arrived in Singapore on 20 April 1854 to begin what would turn out to be the defining period of his life. Wallace decided to continue his collecting in the Indonesian Archipelago and obtained a grant from the Royal Geographical Society to cover his passage. For ten days Wallace and his comrades struggled to survive in a pair of leaking lifeboats until they were sighted and picked up by a ship bound for England. Unfortunately, the brig on which Wallace was sailing to England caught fire and sank, taking almost all of his possessions and collections with it. Wallace left South America in 1852 due to ill health, while Bates remained for several more years. Wallace centered his activities in the middle Amazon and Rio Negro regions. At first they worked as a team, but after a couple of years they split up. Together they planned an expedition to the Amazon and left for Belém, Brazil at the mouth of the Amazon on 25 April 1848. In 1844 he met Henry Walter Bates, already an accomplished entomologist, whose collections and collecting activities captured Wallace's interest. ![]() Wallace was born 8 January 1823 at Usk in Monmouthshire, England. The abbreviated biography is taken from Charles Smith’s excellent “The Alfred Russel Wallace Page” (citation below).Īlfred Russel Wallace was a notable English naturalist, evolutionist, geographer, anthropologist, social critic, and the co-discoverer with Charles Darwin of the theory of evolution and natural selection. |
